Painting the Grand Canyon (First Attempt)

My first attempt at painting the Grand Canyon

Painting #2 the following morning, I think I got the background a little better.

Attempt #3 in the afternoon- struggled on this one- background not so good again.

# 4, was done late in the afternoon, and I focused on the shadows, and the distant vista.

Last one #5, done in the morning before leaving. Still need more contrast in the foreground.

On my trip back from Santa Fe, NM, I decided to stop off at the Grand Canyon for a day, to attempt painting the beauties that the Canyons offer. The weather was absolutely beautiful. I must say, the experience of painting the distance and aerial perspective was extremely challenging. I felt as though I had never painted en plein air before. But with each painting, I seemed to gain a few more clues of something to do. I will be returning to the Grand Canyon at the end of November if the weather is good. But in the meantime I might attempt a studio painting of the canyon to assist with my learning curve.

No an easy thing to do, but you've accomplished it! These are wonderful - you've captures the "hugeness" of the area. Nice!
