Painting Andreas Canyon - Palm Springs, CA

"Morning light on the desert" 6x6 plein air pastel.

"Desert vista" - 12x12 plein air pastel.

Well, I finally got out to paint on Wed., after not painting for over three weeks. It felt good to get out and paint, and I headed out to paint with my plein air group (PAAR) on to the Andrea Canyon in Palm Springs. It was a beautiful day, with wonderful friends to paint with and a fabulous day in the canyon. I always love painting in this canyon with the old palm trees, and lots of huge rocks and boulders everywhere. I first painted the top painting quickly, as the light was changing fast, but I was interested in the shadows on the trunk of one of the palm trees along with the huge leaves and skirts of the trees. After completing the first painting, I walked to another spot and attempted to paint the huge boulders on the side of the canyon area. Shortly after 3 pm, the sun began to go behind the canyon walls and we were quickly in shadows, and the warmth we had experienced, disappeared and it became cold quickly. It was time to pack up, and we headed to Sherman's Deli in Palm Springs for a desert break before heading home. What a great day, it feels good to get back out to paint.
