On the last day of January, I went with my plein air painters group (PAAR) to a wonderful location I have always wanted to paint at, the Indian Canyons in Palm Springs. We got up early and were there for opening at 8 am. A couple of miles into the parking area of Andreas Canyon, there were beautiful groves of fan palms with their skirts down to the ground. There was so much to see and paint, but the first painting I did was of the group of palms that were back lit with the gorgeous hills in the background. I painted next to my friend Terry d Chacon who was looking in the same direction, but of course her painting has a different, impressionistic feel, check out her blog at Terry d Chacon . It is so fun to paint with others, and see their interpretation of the same location. We had a wonderful day. We painting in the morning, then when into town, had lunch and went to the Palm Springs Museum to see the Mayson Dixon show which was great. In the afternoon we returned for more late afternoon light. I painted 4 paints that day, however these two were the best. The little one "Carrot Top" (5x5) I painted as the light was vanishing over the hill ever so quickly. The larger one "Five Fan Palms, is a 12x12 on pastel board. Carrot Top will be entered into the Mini show at the Redlands Art Association Juried show, opening February 20, 2009, who knows if it will make the cut. I think I will return to the canyon before it gets to hot, for more inspiration.
