Painting Red Rock Canyon & Valley of Fire - NV

Last week I spent a fabulous week at a time share, near the Red Rock Canyon area of Las Vegas, NV.  I had never know this beautiful park area was so near the Las Vegas.  If you are ever in the area, this is a must see, if you love beautiful vistas, and interesting red rock formations.  Along on this fun adventure were two of my good friends, Lilli Miles, and Terry d Chacon.   Terry is also a plein air painter, and Lilli took most of these beautiful photos, and keep us entertained with fun music from the car.  The three of us had such a great time taking in the beauty of the are, painting, and fun meals ether at scrumptious restaurants, or fun picnic lunches in the park.
Wildflowers were everywhere in the Red Rock Canyon area.

Late afternoon vista, we painted.  the light was so beautiful, but for some reason I did not feel very well that afternoon, and my painting reflected my feelings, so I have not posted this painting.  BTY Joshua trees in this area look so healthy and beautiful.

This was our second morning of painting.  The weather was getting quite cloudy, and we thought we could get a quick painting in, before the storm arrived.  Well, it was a little colder that we expected, and we had not dressed for the occasion.  Terry took advantage of a light rug I had in the car to rap up in.  We both however did complete a painting while there.
"Red Rock Morning Vista"  6x12 plein air pastel.
So because the morning was so cold, we decided to drive into Las Vegas for lunch, and see the Monet exhibit at the Bellagio Hoetel and Casino.  What a beautiful and inspiring show.  We were also pleasantly surprised to discover that  sculptor Richard Mcdonald has a fabulous display of his bronze sculptures of the "O" careactors  Such beauty!!

So because we were so inspired, we felt like we needed to go back out to do another late afternoon painting.  We did think that the wind had died down.  Well, we were wrong 111  But nerver the less, we did each finish a painting.  Above is a photo of Terry painting while holding down here easel .   Even though her hair is blowing forward, it does not really show how had it was blowing.  The wind came in giant gusts, that would shake the whole car, and of course we were holding on to our easels, to make sure they did not blow over.

"Storm over Red Rocks"  6x12 plein air pastel.
My painting done in the wind.  There were beautiful dark clouds overhead to add to the drama of the late afternoon.

The next day we decided to be energetic and see what it would be like to paint  the sunrise at the Red Rock Canyon.  Well, it was beautiful.  Here you can see the sun rising over the distant mountains.

Here we are starting our paintings, all bundled up, waiting for the light to hit the tops of the Red Rocks.
Here you can see the light up, and lighting up the Red Rocks, so beautiful!!  and of course inspiring..
Both Terry and I were happy with the outcome of the early morning paintings.    Can you believe we are all finished with our paintings and it was only 8:30 am!!

"Early morning light of the Red Rocks"  8x18 plein air pastel.

These are the wild Red Bud trees that  we discovered in the canyon.  So beautiful, we had to paint them next.

"Red Buds of the Canyon" 8x10 plein air pastel.
After we finished painting these beautiful trees, we had a wonderful picnic lunch in this canyon.  Across the way, there were rock climbers, climbing the face of the canyon on the other side.  The day was only half over, but we took a long lunch break and enjoyed the beauty of the are, and the good company.

The last painting of the day was done off the side of the road in the Calico Basin are.    This  area has views of the Red Rocks from the other side, outside of the park.   By now it was quite warm, and we both were glad to have our plein air umbrellas.  What a great day of painting....

Tomorrow I will post our adventures in the Valley of Fire area, north of Las Veaga, another beautiful gem of the area.
