Kim checking out our "Notans"
"Foggy Catalina Island Vista" 6x12 plein air pastel.
My painting at the Portuguese Bend Beach Club.
On July 7 through 9, 2010, I participated in a wonderful Plein air pastel workshop conducted by Master Pastelist, Kim Lordier. The workshop was organized by the Pastel Society of the West Coast, and was held in the Redondo/Huntington Beach area of So. Cal. The first day we painted at the Portuguese Bend Beach Club, with vistas of Catalina Island in the distance. Day one (as all the other days ended up being)was foggy and cool, but it was not raining. Kim talked to us about "Notans" which is a Japanese word for light and dark design, and we went around doing lot's of notans of the area before settling down to paint. The workshop was about pushing us beyond our confort zones and experimenting with new ideas and approaches to painting. Kim is such a skilled artist, and great instructor.
